Cold War and the Tobacco Valley

In the year 1945 intense political and economic struggles erupted between the United States and nations led by the Soviet Union. "It was a real tense kind of dangerous time, really, because nations were really on edge with each other. It was stressful and dangerous." This was the Cold War.  During this war the town of Eureka didn't show much acknowledgment towards the war. (Encarta 98,Wayne Butts).

The intense struggles that led up to the Cold War were some of the following; the Americans and Russians fought over Asian questions in around 1890s. In 1917 Russians and American became enemies because of the seizure of powers by the communists, the Soviet Union being established, and the declaring of ideological war on the capital nations in the west. In 1944 Joseph Stalin, Russian leader, used the Red Army for inquiring security for the Union. Harry S. Truman, the President of the United States went to unite Europe under American leadership. The trust was broken between Joseph Stalin and Harry Truman, when promises of war time agreements were broken. (Encarta 98).

The Cold War worsened between the United States and the Soviet Union because in 1949 there was an explosion of the first atomic bomb by the Soviets, and the conquering home land by communists in China. In 1950 when communists from North Korea invaded in South Korea; Truman sent the United States military, this was the Korean War. This conflict lasted three years.(Encarta 98).

In 1961 conflicts increased during the construction of the Berlin Wall. "I served during the Cold War, prior to the Berlin wall going up, and there wasn't suppose to be any type of combat. There were some incidents that happened because of tensions and there were some good people that lost their lives out of things the government wanted to call non-incidents." (Encarta 98, Wayne Butts).

In 1962 more disagreements amongst the United States and the Soviets rose. The new president John F. Kennedy threatened nuclear invasion when the Soviet Union placed missals in Cuba. Since President Kennedy promised not to invade Cuba, Soviet withdrew their missals. Later on, Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan both agreed to cut back the powers in Europe and temperate ideological competition. When eastern European nations elected non-communists governments and the two Germany's united in to one, everything, slowly, come to a stop. (Encarta 98)

In the meantime during this war of intense United States and Soviets struggles, the little town of Eureka, Montana in Lincoln County, did not discuss the Cold War events what so ever in their local newspaper. When it comes to this town it is only Eureka news all the way. This towns local newspaper contains mostly news about logging, 4-H rodeos, and school events. The closest thing that ever came to international news was the election of John F. Kennedy in their November 10, 1960 issue. Personally, the key thing to a newspaper is news from all different places. Eureka, in a matter of opinions, is basically a town full of people that care only about their town's needs, events, and stories.(Tobacco Valley News, Issues: a; b; c ,bibliography)

The year 1945, was the beginning of the Cold War, a war between the United Stated and the Soviet Union. In the end most of all the problems that caused the war have been settled and any issues they may have had have been taken care of. In all ends, bless everybody who fought for their country. Everyone is created with equal respect in the eyes of the Creator. "They weren't our enemies, it was the government that was the enemy. These people were just like us." (Wayne Butts).
